General Info

Description

Azopt® eye drops are manufactured by Alcon. The active ingredient of the medication is Brinzolamide – a topical sulphonamide inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase.

Indications:

- elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in people with primary open-angle glaucoma (also known as chronic glaucoma) or ocular hypertension.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Brinzolamide inhibits the isozyme carbonic anhydrase II (CA-II), that is crucial for regulating aqueous humor production and pressure in the eye. Inhibition of carbonic anhydrase decreases aqueous humour secretion. This results in a reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) – a major cause of optic nerve damage and glaucomatous visual field loss.

Dosage

For increased IOP in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension

Adults: instill 1 drop in the treated eye(s) 3 times daily. May be used concomitantly with other topical ophthalmic agents to lower intraocular pressure. The IOP-lowering effect is expected to last for 5-7 days.

Precautions

Shake well prior to using.

If more than one ophthalmic drug is used, the two drugs should be administered at a 10-minute interval.

Azopt® eye drops are not intended for use in individuals under 17 years of age.

Azopt® suspension is for topical ophthalmic use only, not for injection.

Azopt® suspension is associated with allergic reactions, even following a single dose. Discontinue using Azopt® immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.

Avoid contaminating the applicator tip with eye, fingers or another source.

Contact lenses should be removed before administrating Azopt® eye drops and may be reinserted after 15 minutes.

Wash your hands before using the eye drops.

Missing a dose

If you miss a dose you should instill it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not instill a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 4 to 30 degrees C (39 to 86 degrees F), away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Use within one month after opening a container. Keep out of the reach of children.
