Description

Bioclan® manufacturer is SavaVet. Bioclan® comprises the active ingredient Clindamycin, a semisynthetic antibiotic belonging to the group of medications called Lincosamides.

Indications:

Dogs:

- skin infections (wounds, abscesses) due to coagulasse-positive staphylicocci;

- deep wounds and abscesses due to Bacteroides fragilis, Prevotella melaninogenicus, Fusobacterium necrophorum and Clostridium perfringens;

- dental infections due to Staphylococcus aureus, Bacteroides fragilis, Prevotella melaninogenicus, Fusobacterium necrophorum and Clostridium perfringens;

- osteomyelitis due to Staphylococcus aureus, Bacteroides fragilis, Prevotella melaninogenicus, Fusobacterium necrophorum and Clostridium perfringens;

Cats:

- skin infections (wounds, abscesses) due to Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus intermedius, Staphylococcus spp.;

- deep wounds and abscesses due to Bacteroides fragilis and Clostridium perfringens;

- dental infections due to Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus intermedius, Staphylococcus spp., Bacteroides fragilis and Clostridium perfringens.

Bioclan® is not effective for treating infections caused by a virus or fungus.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Clindamycin is bacteriostatic and works by slowing or stopping bacteria growth. Clindamycin inhibits the synthesis of essential proteins, which are required by bacteria to carry out vital functions. Clindamycin is effective against susceptible Gram-positive organisms, staphylococci (both penicillinase- and non-penicillinase-producing), streptococci (except Streptococcus faecalis) and pneumococci. It is also indicated in serious infections caused by susceptible anaerobic pathogens. Clindamycin does not penetrate the blood-brain barrier in therapeutically effective quantities.

Dosage

Before starting Bioclan® therapy, the involved pathogens should be identified and sensitivity to Clindamycin established.

Bioclan® should never be administered without first consulting your veterinarian.

Bioclan® should be given with small amount of water after to encourage the pill to enter the stomach.

Dogs

For skin (wounds, abscesses) and dental infections: 11 mg/kg of body weight per 24 hours or 5,5 mg/kg per 12 hours for 7-10 days.

For osteomyelitis: 11 mg/kg of body weight every 12 hours during 28 days.

Cats

For skin (wounds, abscesses) and dental infections: 11 mg/kg of body weight per 24 hours or 5,5 mg/kg per 12 hours for 7-10 days.

Precautions:

Perform periodically liver and kidney function tests and blood counts if therapy lasts 1 month or greater.

Animals with severe renal and/or very severe hepatic disturbances accompanied by severe metabolic aberrations should be dosed with caution and should be monitored by serum examination during high-dose Clindamycin therapy.

Clindamycin can cause the overgrowth of non-sensitive organisms such as resistant clostridia and yeasts. In cases of superinfection (infection occurring due to the treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotic), take appropriate measures according to the clinical situation.

Missing a dose

If you miss a dose you should give it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue the regular dosing schedule. Do not administer a double dose of Bioclan® to compensate the missed dose.

Overdose

If an overdose occurs and a pet is feeling unwell, stop giving the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact a healthcare provider immediately.

Storage

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F) and away from excess moisture and heat. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.

Side effects

The most common side effects associated with Bioclan® are:

• allergic reactions
• vomiting
• diarrhea
• decreased appetite
• weight loss

Contraindications

Do not use Bioclan® in animals that are allergic to Clindamycin, other Lincosamides or to other ingredients comprised in the medication.

Do not use Bioclan® to rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, horses or ruminants because ingestion of Clindamycin by these species may result in severe gastrointestinal disturbance.

Do not use Bioclan® in pregnant or breeding animals.

Bioclan® should be used with caution in animals receiving neuromuscular blocking agents.

Bioclan® should not be used concomitantly with chloramphenicol or macrolides as they antagonize each other at their site of action at the 50s ribosomal sub-unit.

Q: Can I give Bioclan® to my cat if he has osteomyelitis?

A: No, unfortunately you cannot. Bioclan® can be used to treat osteomyelitis in dogs only.
